What Is Interventional Oncology

​

Interventional Oncology is the image-guided procedures, ie minimally-invasive techniques to treat cancer and cancer related issues. Most procedures are either outpatient or require an overnight stay in the hospital with minimal recovery time.

Advanced Interventional Radiology Solutions uses chemotherapy, radiation and ablation therapy to shrink or destroy tumors. Kidney, liver, and bone tumors are among the most common conditions we treat.

We work together with your oncologist, oncosurgeon and radiation oncologist to determine the best treatment option for the patient.

 

What Are The Treatment Options ?

Intra-arterial Therapies:                     
 

         Liver Tumors are supplied by the hepatic artery. We use this hepatic artery route to inject liquids/particles loaded with either chemomedicine or radioactive beads containing Yttrium-90. These treatments can be effective for both primary tumors such as hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma, as well as liver-dominant metastatic tumors including neuroendocrine tumor, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, melanoma and other selected patients.

Ablative Therapies:

​

       Ablation destroys tumors by achieving extreme temperatures after the target tumor is punctured with one or more applicators under ultrasound or CT guidance. Ablation modalities can generate special heat by delivering microwave or radiofrequency energy or cold via cryoablation. Primary and metastatic tumors of the liver, kidney and lung can be treated with this process.

Pain Palliation:

​

Cancer patients having pain from skeletal metastases, relief can often be obtained either by ablation or vertebroplasty, where stabilizing cement is injected under careful fluoroscopic guidance. In some patients, these two percutaneous interventions may be combined to relieve unbearable cancer pain.

Neoadjuvant (Pre-operative) Procedures:

​

Patients who may need the curative liver surgery, but would have insufficient remnant liver tissue left remaining, portal vein embolization can be useful. Portal vein embolization procedure helps grow the normal part of the  liver which provides fruitful recovery from surgery.

Pre operative embolization of vascular metastatic tumors carcinomas of renal and thyroid origin is an effective adjuvanttechnique that significantly decrease the intraoperative blood loss and resultant surgical morbidity.

Patients those have hypervascular bone tumors are also the candidates for pre operative embolization which effectively reduce the vascularity of the tumor, reducing intraoperative blood loss and reduce the surgery time and surgical morbidity in cases of GCT, Aneurysmal Bone Cyst and Sarcomas.

Mediports :

​

A port is a small device that is placed under the skin on your chest or arm. The port connects to a small, soft tube called a catheter which is placed inside one of the large central veins that take blood to your heart.

Patients can receive a number of medications infused through a mediport including chemotherapy. They can also be used for blood draws and transfusions, eliminating the need for multiple IV Sticks for a patient with frequent blood work and infusions. A port can stay in place for months or even years if needed.

Biopsies :

​

We can perform a biopsy, tissue or cell sampling, of almost any organ or body part. We send our specimens out to an independent laboratory for testing. Your doctor will receive results in 4-6 days of testing. While we can provide conscious sedation for a patient’s comfort, some biopsies can be performed with just local anesthesia. Common biopsy sites are liver, bone, soft tissue, lymph node, muscle, and kidneys.
